January 31, 2015--Johnny Cash, God's Gonna Cut You Down

Artist:  Johnny Cash
Song:  God's Gonna Cut You Down
Album:  American V:  A Hundred Highways

There isn't a single things that I could say about Johnny Cash that hasn't already been said.  The man is a legend, and rightfully so.  I mean, take a good look at his life.  He put himself through hell and back.  He rose from ashes, he loved and lived deeply, lost his soul-mate only to join her a few short months later, and he still inspires.

You know that quote from the Sandlot?  "Heroes get remembered, but legends never die."  Well, if that's true then Johnny Cash lives in the inspired lives of all those he left behind and his spirit flows from the songs he sang.

I absolutely love this music video that was made after his passing by a group of musical artists who wished to pay tribute to Johnny Cash.  His voice washes over you and fills you.  The richness of his sound infiltrates your mind and soul and cuts to the deepest part of you.

Johnny Cash was never Nashville.  He was never honky tonk.  He was never rock and roll.  You can't pigeon hole a sound like Johnny Cash, just like you couldn't pigeon hole the man that he was.  He was and will always be the one of a kind whose sound no one else has.  He sang his songs like he lived his life.  They're full of beauty, ugliness, love, sin, truth, and real.  Maybe that's why we love him so much.  There aren't many musicians who've come into this world who were as genuine and real as the late, great Johnny Cash.

January 30, 2015--A Thousand Horses, Smoke

Artist:  A Thousand Horses
Song:  Smoke
Album:  Smoke EP

Okay, so I've just recently started listening to these guys and I've seriously got a Whiskey Myers vibe going on with them.  They've been hailed as somewhere between Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and the Black Crowes.

I love their sound, and though I don't know much of their music, I encourage you to start listening to them with me.

enjoy!

January 29, 2015--Kevin Fowler, Love Song

Okay, so I guess I'm over being pissed off and I'm ready to write again.  So, here goes.....

Artist:  Kevin Fowler
Song:  Love Song
Album:  How Country Are Ya

I love to listen to a little Kevin Fowler.  The man has got quite the range of style.  He's got a tendency to show his sense of humor in his music, as you can tell from the song above.  He's also damn good at taking a more serious with songs such as "Long Line Of Losers".

Fowler has written top 40 hits for singers such as Sammy Kershaw (Beer, Bait, & Ammo), Mark Chestnut (The Lord Loves The Drinkin' Man), and Montgomery Gentry (Long Line Of Losers).  He was born in 1966 in Amarillo, TX and after he graduated high school he moved out to LA to go to further his musical education at a Music Institute located there.  Soon after he came back to Austin and began writing and playing.

It was around 1998 when Kershaw and Chestnut began singing the cover of Fowler's songs during their live shows, which Montgomery Gentry followed suit in 2008.  Kevin Fowler doesn't seem to be going anywhere.  He's still writing, still touring, and still loving life.  His fun-loving nature hasn't waned since he began.  Fowler is a prominent force in the Red Dirt music scene, with multiple number one hits on the Texas Music Charts.

Give him a listen, I like "Love Song", "Long Line Of Losers", "That Girl", and "Best Mistake I Ever Made".

A Little Frustrated

So, what I'm trying to do here is support musical artists.  I'm trying to encourage other's to listen to their stuff.  I'm saying, "HEY!  Give these guys another listen!"  Whether they're a new artist that you've not heard of before or an old artist that you've loved for years and you may have forgotten just how much you enjoyed them.  I'm just trying to encourage you to listen to these people, let their music wash over you and bring up memories, or stir up emotions--to do what music does.

Unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way.  Unfortunately, some of the artists that I'm promoting are saying that I'm infringing on copyrighted material.  That isn't the case and the issue has been successfully disputed, but that doesn't change the fact that it still stings.  I'm a bit frustrated...a bit angry...a bit indignant.

That's okay, I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing, I'm just going to have to go at it a little differently in some instances.  Most of the artists have given me some really positive feedback.  They've re-grammed my images on Instagram as well as "liking" and "commenting" on them.  So, it's all good.  Just chapped my ass a little.

There are many of these artists that you'll see on my blog on more than one occasion.  There is one that you won't.  I still like the artist and enjoy their work, however I will not be promoting them on here again. As much as I enjoy the music it isn't worth being attacked over when all I'm trying to do is spread the love.

I realize that I haven't done a review today, but that's because I've been too busy disputing their claim against me.  I'll make up for the lapse tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good night.

adios bitchachos!

January 28, 2015--Foy Vance, Dark Horse

Artist:  Foy Vance
Song:  Dark Horse
Album:  Feel For Me EP (2014)

Foy Vance was born in Ireland in 1971 and spent the first five years of his life in....OKLAHOMA!  Who would've thought?  His father was a traveling minister.  It was during this early time in his life that Foy was exposed to the many different musical styles in America. Vance was drawn to the spiritual aspect of certain types of musical style found in the American South, such as blues and jazz harmonies.  He moved back to Ireland at five, but retained his love for music, particularly the American style.

His music has been featured in movies and television shows across multiple countries.  He is an amazing songwriter and his natural Irish lilt gives another dimension to his singing.  The way he plays the acoustic guitar proves that like most Irish, he is a master storyteller, though he chooses to sing his stories rather than speak them.

Try him out....he's a mellow, soothing go-to in my music player, thanks to my cousin Halie, who sent me a message telling me that I had to listen to his music.  She was right.  Now I'm passing along the favor.  Put a little Foy Vance in your music library.  You'll be glad you did.

January 27, 2015--Pudde Of Mudd, Blurry

Artist:  Puddle of Mudd
Song:  Blurry
Album:  Come Clean

I've been in a rock mood today.  Ever since Jen and I made our way back from Dallas this past Saturday night I've had Puddle of Mudd stuck in my head.  I think we listened to "Control" at least three times.  Blaring down the highway at one in the morning.  Of course, that's the only right way to play Puddle of Mudd.  LOUD.

I didn't realize that these guys started way back in 1991!  It wasn't until 2001 when Fred Durst, the lead singer of Limp Bizkit, signed the band to his record label.  The original Puddle of Mudd was no more, but Wes Scantlin (lead singer) remained.  "Come Clean" was the album that made them huge.  Between "Control" and "Blurry" the guys were shot into stardom.  In 2002, "She Hates Me" was released and made it's way to number one on the music charts.  You should watch the video to that one.  It's great.

The guys have opened for acts such as Godsmack and Deftones, as well as being headliners themselves.  Lead singer, Wes, has been said to have an eerily similar voice to that of Kurt Cobain...I guess I can hear what they're saying...but I'm honestly more partial to Wes than to Kurt.

Gotta say, love me some Puddle of Mudd.  "Spin You Around" is also one of my favorite songs by them.

enjoy!

January 26, 2015--Bowling For Soup, Friends O' Mine

Artist:  Bowling For Soup
Song:  Friends O' Mine
Album:  A Hangover You Didn't Deserve (2004)

There will never be a time when I don't share some Bowling For Soup.  I love these guys!  Can you believe these guys got their start back in 1994?  I was only 6 years old!  They started in Wichita Falls, TX then later moved to Denton, TX.  They didn't really get to rolling until 1998 when their EP "Tell Me When To Whoa" was released and since it did so well, selling over 10,000 copies, Jive Records signed the guys.

They re-released quite a few songs from "Tell Me When To Whoal" along with some new ones, mostly cover songs, on the album "Let's Do It For Johnny".  Then they released "Drunk Enough To Dance".  That's when things got big.  They were nominated for a Grammy for their song "Girl All The Bad Guys Want".  They sing about the effect that nomination had on them in their next album "A Hangover You Didn't Deserve" during the song "My Hometown", great song by the way.

Anyway, these guys are awesome.  This pop-punk group was influenced by so many different artists.  They refer to Bon Jovi and Motley Crue on multiple occasions.  They also found influence in the Ramones and Green Day, but that doesn't mean that they're anything like these other groups.  No, BFS is an entity unto themselves.  You'll catch yourself singing along and laughing along.

They're my pick-me-up band.  When I'm in a slump or just kinda blah I can turn these guys on and immediately feel better.  They say that laughter is the best medicine and I can bet that you'll laugh if you give them a good listen.

If you haven't listened to them much then here are some of my favorite songs by the group:

1. Almost
2. Trucker Hat
3. Come Back To Texas
4....Okay....the entire "Hangover" album
5.  Val Kilmer
6.  My Hometown
7.  When We Die
8.  A Friendly Goodbye
9.  Luckiest Loser
10. Emily

and #11--Get Happy

So, go.  Get Happy, and listen to some BFS.

January 25, 2015--Tracy Lawrence, Better Man Better Off

Artist:  Tracy Lawrence
Song:  Better Man, Better Off
Album:  The Coast Is Clear

I bet it's been a while since you've listened to Tracy Lawrence. Well, it had been for me until a month or so ago.  I don't know what happened then, but I'm thinking it was my family's Christmas get together.  We were all hanging out in the garage listening to music.  I got the job of DJ and decided we were going to throw in some stuff we hadn't heard in a while.  Tracy came up and I haven't been able to take him off my music player since.

Tracy was born in Atlanta, TX and raised in Foreman, AR.  He had a love for music at an early age.  His mother had to write down the lyrics to his first song, since he was only four years old when he wrote it and hadn't learn how to spell yet.

After college Tracy made his way to Nashville where he worked in phone sales and played talent shows to build his name.  Eventually, that paid off.  His first album, "Sticks and Stones" came out in 1991 and Tracy has released 8 studio albums since then, not including compilations and a Christmas album.

I love his songs.  His deep voice just draws me in.  His rich tones just wash over you and pull at you.  The above song along with "Alibis", "Texas Tornado", and "If The World Had A Front Porch" are some of my favorites, though there are many others that are great to listen to.

If it's been a while since you listened to Tracy Lawrence then I'm going to encourage you to take a break from the hear and now and take four minutes to listen to your favorite Tracy Lawrence song.  If you don't have one, then listen to one of mine.

Enjoy!

January 24, 2015--Garth Brooks, Rodeo

Due to the misguided nature of certain companies, this review has been removed.

January 23, 2015--Eli Young Band, Enough Is Enough

Yes, this one is a bit late, but I was having a little too much fun to post the past few nights. :)

Anyway, here goes....

Artist:  Eli Young Band
Song:  Enough is Enough
Album:  Jet Black & Jealous (2008)

I just love these guys.  One of those groups that finally made it on the national music scene.  These guys got their start in Denton, TX.  Mike Eli and James Young attended college together at the University of North Texas, sharing a dorm room together as freshmen.  The addition of bassist Jon Jones and drummer Chris Thompson changed the then named group, Eli & Young, to the Eli Young Band.

The group opened for Miranda Lambert in 2003, who was then just a rising star herself.  They've opened for acts such as Pat Green, Cross Canadian Ragweed, and Jack Ingram.  Of course, they aren't opening acts any longer.  These guys are headliners playing for arena and stadium filled crowds.

They didn't get their first major hit until the album "Life At Best" hit the scenes with "Crazy Girl", written by Liz Rose and Lee Brice.  The song turned them into a sensation earning them a platinum selling record, a number one hit, and the CMA award for Song of the Year.  Now, even though "Crazy Girl" wasn't written by them, the guys do write the majority of their own music, staying true to their Red Dirt roots and only agreeing to the songs that truly speak to them.

I really enjoy these guys.  They've got the edgier side of Texas country mixed in with a little heartland.  I really love "Down On Padre", "Oklahoma Girl", "Guinevere", "Small Town Kid", and so many more.  This is one of those bands that I can put on and not have to switch songs very often at all.  Especially from their 2005 album, "Level" (it's my favorite).

You want a break up song?  Listen to the one above.  You want a break up, but don't regret it song?  Listen to "Here's to You".  You want a heartbreak song?  Listen to "What Does?".  You want a fun song? "Listen to "Down on Padre" or "Drunk Last Night".  You want a love song? Listen to "I Still Think It's Me".  Need some motivation? Listen to "The Fight" or "Mystery in the Making".  And while you're listening to those you should check out "My Old Man's Son" because it's awesome too.

Happy listening.  That should keep you busy for a while. :)

January 22, 2015--Rich O'Toole, Never Gonna Quit

Artist:  Rich O'Toole
Song:  Never Gonna Quit
Album:  Jaded (2014)

You know, there isn't a whole lot out there when you look for Rich O'Toole's biography on the internet, but the man has been around for a while now.  He started about seven years ago with the release of his debut album, "Seventeen".  He now has five albums, the latest one, "Jaded", was released just last year in March of 2014.

Rich has had a number of top ten hits on the Texas music charts and shows no signs of slowing as "Jaded", the track the album was named for, makes it's way up the ranks.  On his second album, "In A Minute or 2" he sang a duet with Josh Abbott, lead singer and songwriter of the Josh Abbott Band (whom I love dearly).  The name of that track is "Ay Dios Mio".

Rich has opened for Willie Nelson and Josh Abbott.  This Houston native has even taken his Country-Rock style to California, where he penned and recorded "Jaded".  His songs have a definite personal touch with fun melodies.  He's a very story-oriented songwriter, as all of his songs seem to have distinct story to tell.

O'Toole has a passion for his work and a love for performing.  He said in an interview once, "If I didn't love playing city after city so much, I wouldn't do it."  He thrives off of writing and playing music.  Five albums in less than seven years proves that and I'm sure we can expect to hear more from Rich for years to come.

I hope you liked the song.  Let me know what you think!

January 21, 2015--Kid Rock, Blue Jeans & A Rosary

Artist:  Kid Rock
Song:  Blue Jeans & A Rosary
Album:  Rock & Roll Jesus

Okay, so we've all heard of Kid Rock.  Whether it's his southern rock style music that we've heard from him lately, or the rap metal that made him famous back in the late 90s.  But did you know that "Devil Without A Cause" was his fourth album?  I didn't.  Hell, I'd never heard of him until I was twelve years old and "Bawitdaba" had picked up a lot of steam.  I didn't realize that he'd been fighting for 10 years to become known.

Robert Ritchie, aka Kid Rock, put a lot of work into his success.  His unusual style didn't catch on until the late 90s when Limp Bizkit and Korn became popular.  He created this over-the-top white trash persona and owned it.  Yes, he's explicit.  Yes, he's loud.  Yes, he's rude.  Yes, he's got a song for every mood.

Kid couldn't just be lumped into one category.  After the success of "Picture" with Sheryl Crow he started leaving behind a lot of the rap metal sound that we'd all grown accustomed to hearing from him and gave us a less crude, more melodious side to his music.

Kid Rock is friends with quite a few musicians who have influenced him, Hank Williams Jr. being the most obvious.  He's also performed songs that were written by his friend and talented musician, David Alan Coe.  Kid inducted Bob Segar into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, dated Pamela Anderson, crossed musical borders, and still hasn't finished.

I, personally, am a fan of his softer side.  Yes, teenage me loved the in-your-face attitude and profanity of Kid's rap-metal style, and sometimes, when the mood strikes, I go back and listen to a little "Cocky" and "Devil Without A Cause".  But usually you'll find me listening to his tribute song to Waylon Jennings that he recorded with Kenny Chesney of "Lukenbach, TX" or something from his three latest albums "Born Free", "Rebel Soul" and "Rock & Roll Jesus".

He's definitely an artist I need to be in the mood to listen to, but since I couldn't get "Blue Jeans & A Rosary" out of my head all day today (even though I haven't listened to it in quite some time) I decided that this is the song and artist that I'd feature.

And since I love Kid's version of this song, I felt the need to share it with everyone.  If you don't listen to "Blue Jeans" then please listen to this one.

Enjoy!

January 20, 2015--George Strait, Marina Del Rey

Artist:  George Strait
Song:  Marina Del Rey
Album:  Strait From The Heart

The one and ONLY George Strait.  The King of Country.  King George.  I'm sure I could keep on.  Typing that made me feel like the group of boys from the "Sandlot" trying to describe Babe Ruth.  But that's exactly what George Strait is.  He IS the Babe Ruth of country music. When I talk to someone who doesn't know George Strait I feel just like that group of boys who tried to describe the Great Bambino to their friend, Smalls.  Confused and appalled.

This is the man that brought country music back in the 80s and hasn't stopped.  I personally  hope that George will save country music in this decade of the 21st century like he saved it from pop-country back in the early 80s.  This man is Pure Country and I'm not just talking about the movie he starred in during the early 90s (which he OWNED, by the way).

George Harvey Strait was born on May 18, 1952 (great birthday*) in the town of Poteet, Texas.  His father was a junior high teacher and he also managed the family farm, which has been in George's family for over 100 years.  I think it's safe to say that George was and is and will always be a traditional country man all the way to his deepest roots.  George's mother left him and his brother taking only their sister.  The boys were raised by their father.  George had always been drawn to music and attempted to form a rock band while still in high school.  He later made his way to country and started a group called Ace In The Hole while he was in college.

George dropped out of college and enlisted in the Army.  After being stationed in Hawaii, George began playing music for fellow troops with a group of his called Rambling Country.  Later George went solo.  He faced quite a bit of adversity whilst trying to make a name for himself in the country music scene.  Finally, in 1981, MCA Records signed George and he's been the biggest success in country music since!

I can't begin to name all of George's hits, but I can tell you some of my favorites.  "Carrying Your Love With Me" will always be a favorite, because it reminds me of my late Mema and Papa, along with "Check Yes or No", "Ocean Front Property", "Amarillo By Morning", "Write This Down", "Baby Blue", and so many more.

Mema and Papa, at my desk

January 19, 2015--Cameran Nelson, Shotgun

Artist:  Cameran Nelson
Song:  Shotgun
Album:  Shotgun [Single]

Cameran Nelson isn't a name you hear unless you're following the Texas music scene...but the man and his band, Guardrail Damage Ahead, are here to stay.  Honestly, it was hard just picking out one song to share a video or lyric of.  The group started in 2010 and had their first big success just two years ago in 2013.

If you listen to his song, "Happy to Beer" you'll hear the names of a number of other artists ranging from Roger Creager all the way to Lee Brice.  Nelson has played with all of these artists and it's even more evident that he's drank with them.  The song is bound to make you smile and chuckle from time to time.  The above mentioned song, "Shotgun", is his newest single and is moving up on the Texas music charts.

Nelson also had a song that hit number one on the Texas charts in 2014, "35 Runs Both Ways".  It's a great song!  His gravelly voice drives it home.  Cameran is a Texas boy from his head down to his boots.  He's lived over so much of Texas that, in his biography, it claims that Cameran is from 1,815 miles of Texas!

Cameran started playing bass when he was 13 in his father's country music band.  He later went on to college and studied guitar and vocals.  Cameran even had the privilege of working with the late Gary Stewart, who taught Nelson a thing or two about stage presence and how to treat and entertain your audience.  Cameran loves the live act and says so.  "I love getting to share our show and songs with new audiences."

He can do it all from love songs to fun songs and from the good times to the hard.  I believe that if you were to give him a listen, not to just one but a few of his songs, you would feel as I do.  Cameran and his band may be just starting out, but they're building steam and it won't be long until his name and music is known not just by those following the Texas music scene, but by everyone in every music scene.

Look for songs by him like, "Reckless in Texas", "Happy To Beer", "35 Runs Both Ways", "Shotgun", "Thrown", and if you're looking for a little chuckle, "Backslider's Hymn".

January 18, 2015--JB & The Moonshine Band, Only Drug I Do

Artist:  JB & The Moonshine Band
Song:  Only Drug I Do
Album:  Beer For Breakfast

Okay, so these guys have been around for a few years, but I love their story.  This four-man band is first and foremost friends as close as family.  Their lead man and songwriter, JB Patterson, held auditions to form the group back in 2009.  The funny thing is, only three guys showed up!  Turns out, these three guys couldn't have been a better fit.

If you decide to go to their page, you can go to the "About" section and read JB's quote about how the band really started, or more accurately, why.  There's nothing like becoming a parent to give you a good kick.

These boys from Tyler, Texas are signed to Colt Ford's label and they have such a wide range of songs.  From the love songs like "Only Drug I Do" to the ones that make you think "Did they just say that?!" like "Sticker Peck Out".  They're bound to make you laugh and smile and love the one you're with.

These guys have pluck and spunk and a little something extra.  They're not afraid to try something just a little different, and when they do, it's like that first call for auditions...it fits!  They sing about it all, from hangover cures to love songs to hometown pride.

I look forward to seeing how these guys surprise us next!

January 17, 2015--Tesla, "The Way It Is"

Artist:  Tesla
Song:  The Way It Is
Album:  The Great Radio Controversy

Yes, these guys have been around a while. Guess what?  They're no less amazing than when they began in 1982.  Frank Hannon (guitarist) was only 15 when these guys formed the band City Kidd, they later changed the name of their band to Tesla in 1986.  Their manager had basically told them that City Kidd was a crappy band name, plus there was another group around the area at that time going by City Kidd as well.  Too unoriginal.  These guys decided on the name Tesla and even used inspiration from inventor Nikolai Tesla in some of their songs and album titles, such as their first album, "Mechanical Resonance."

Tesla in the 80s

They opened for a number of different acts back in the 80s, like David Lee Roth, Poison, Def Leopard, and Alice Cooper.  Even though they opened for these guys, they didn't like being seen as a "glam rock" band.  These guys have stood the test of time and have proven that they are much more than just a "glam rock" group.

Their ballad "Love Song" pretty much cemented them into the music scene, helping them grow a loyal fan base and encouraging listeners to delve deeper into the other tracks on their albums.  They've been making music and touring since their inception in 1982 and they show no signs of slowing down.   Speaking of signs, their cover of the song "Signs" is one of their widest known hits, and for good reason.

The above song, "The Way It Is" is one of my all-time favorites along with "What You Give".  Give them a listen yourself.  Oh, and if you were hoping to see their show at the end of this month at the Choctaw Casino and Resort in Durant, OK then you better already have your tickets because it is SOLD OUT.

Tesla 2014

Enjoy!

January 16, 2015--Shooter Jennings, "Outlaw You"

Artist:  Shooter Jennings
Song:  Outlaw You
Album:  Single Only

Shooter Jennings.  Most people know this name.  You hear the name "Jennings" and you're automatically transported to the late, great Waylon Jennings.  Shooter's father.  However, Shooter's success is completely his own. Listening to his lyrics, you can tell the deep love and respect that he has for his father and for his father's career.  "Outlaw You" is a jab at all the "Bro Country" that has plagued the second decade of this century.  Taking lyrical swings at artists like Eric Church, Luke Bryan, and Jason Aldean, Shooter doesn't hold much back, but then again...he never has.

His first album was titled "Put the O Back in Country"  and he's released 9 albums since his first, which was released in 2005.  Shooter is a multifaceted, in-your-face, don't-hold-back musician.  He learned how to play the drums at age five, by age 8 he was taking piano lessons, and by age 14 he was playing guitar while occasionally playing drums for his father.

I love his raw and true to yourself nature.  Shooter has released multiple singles, all of which are awesome.  Just to name a few:  "Steady at the Wheel", "Aviators", "Walk Of Life", "It Ain't Easy", and "The Real Me".

If you haven't listened to a lot of him in the past....you may want to remedy that.  He hits home and isn't afraid to say, or sing, what's on his mind.

January 15, 2015--Aaron Watson, July in Cheyenne

Artist:  Aaron Watson
Song:  July in Cheyenne
Album:  Real Good Time

Aaron Watson has been around Texas and bringing music to folks since the late 90s.  He attended Abilene Christian University where he first picked up a guitar and began to write.  Songwriting wasn't Watson's first choice, however.  He has a profound love for baseball, but his career was stopped short by an injury.  His mother had always encouraged him to sing, and after the injury something inside him decided to get to it.

Watson played around Texas for some time before releasing his first album, "A Texas Cafe".  This cowboy has released 11 albums with a 12th on the way.  "The Underdog" is due to be released on February 17th of this year with the single "That Look" already climbing the music charts.

Aaron and wife Kimberly haven't been without heartache.  They lost one of their four children shortly after she was born.  There was no more music pouring from Watson's soul.  No more rich tones and feel good lyrics filling his heart.  Then he did what a lot of us fail to do:  he prayed.  Pouring his heart and soul out to God he said, "God, I don't think I can do this.  If music is what you need me to do, then I need some help." (See more at: http://www.aaronwatson.com/about.html#sthash.XSNEyLJD.dpuf)

After that, Watson recorded the album "Real Good Time" in just a month's time!  This man is a delightful cross between a Honky Tonk and a Church Pew.  Aaron reminds me of the greats.  He's a real cowboy and I love his testament to Lane Frost in the above song.

He's got a lot of other wonderful hits like "3rd Gear and 17", "Fast Cars & Slow Kisses", "Summertime Girl", and his newest "That Look".  If you give him a listen, then I know you'll understand why I like him so much.  Not to mention the fact that Aaron is all about God and his fans.  He's one of those artists that will stay behind no matter how large or small the crowd and make sure that every single fan goes home knowing that he's grateful to them for their love and support.

Aaron Watson has been successful the last 15 years, lets see what the next 15 has in store.

"The Underdog" to be released February 17, 2015
Look for it on iTunes and Amazon Music

January 14, 2015--Wade Hayes, "The Day That She Left Tulsa (In A Chevy, In A Hurry)"

Artist:  Wade Hayes
Song:  The Day That She Left Tulsa (In A Chevy, In A Hurry)
Album:  When The Wrong One Loves You Right

Am I the only person that has asked, "Hey, where did Wade Hayes go?"  Well, apparently I've had my head under a rock because this Oklahoma boy hasn't gone anywhere.  Born in Bethel Acres, Oklahoma Wade is the son of country music artist Don Hayes.  His father was a major inspiration to him and encouraged him in his musical journey.

Wade has had a lot of ups and downs since we remember him from the 90s with hits like, "Old Enough To Know Better", "When The Wrong One Loves You Right", and "How Do You Sleep At Night".  Well, guess what?  He's been around and he hasn't given up on music either!  He collaborated with Alan Jackson's fiddle player, Mark McClurg, and together they make the duo McHayes.  He also released a studio album in 2009 called "Place To Turn Around".

In 2011 Wade was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.  I'm glad to say that his operation was a success with the last remaining tumors being removed in March of 2012.  Wade's experience with cancer inspired him to right his last released single, "Is It Already Time?"  It's a wonderful song and I suggest you listen to it before you leave this page.

The talented and inspiring Mr. Hayes has thankfully not written his last song. Personally, I know that I'll be looking out for whatever he shares with us in the future.

Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed this!

January 13, 2015--Bart Crow, "Running With the Devil"

Artist:  Bart Crow
Song:  Running With The Devil
Album:  Heartworn Tragedy

Hats off to Mr. Bart Crow, ladies and gentlemen!  I'd like to thank him for his service to our country.  He served in the United States Army after he graduated high school   Using his down time to write music, he and his band later topped the Texas music charts on a number of occasions.  The album "Finally..." was released in 2005.  "Desperate Hearts" came out in 2008, "Heartworn Tragedy" in 2009, and his latest album, "Dandelion" was released in 2012.

My goodness, I love me some Bart Crow!  He's got a unique sound that is totally his own.  He puts on a killer show, too!  "Running With the Devil" has got to be one of my favorites, although after a recent divorce, I have to admit I've belted out "Wear My Ring" on many occasions.  There's only one way to listen to that song:  LOUD!  I love each of his albums.  With each one you can sense an evolution to his songwriting.  The ever improving Bart Crow is already a Master in my mind.

By the way, you should check out his video to "Lovin' You's A Crime" on YouTube.  It's hilarious.  The "Dandelion" album sports a remake of the song "If I Go, I'm Going", which was originally by Gregory Alan Iskavov.  I think it's fair to say that Bart and upcoming female artist Macy Maloy did the song justice all while making it their own.  This song is also the first duet that Bart has done.

He's had success with so much of his work with songs like, "Little Bit of Luck", "Cold Heart", "Better Day", and "Understand", I'm sure you can relate to why I'm excited for what else is to come from Bart Crow.

Bart Crow, himself.  Unfortunately, not a photo I took.  However, I do have one with him, I just haven't taken the time to find it.  I can guarantee that it's likely on one of my external hard-drives. I got to meet him in Justin, TX at the Mule Barn and it was a blast!  And, by the way, don't you just love his tattoos?!  I know I do.

The above is a photo of the lovely Macy Maloy. I snapped this just a couple of weeks ago at the Josh Abbott Band performance.  She sang a duet with Mr. Abbott (Oh, Tonight), and she was incredible!  I can't wait to see what else Miss Maloy surprises us with in the future.

AA

Hello.  My name is Keisha, and I'm addicted.

It's official:

But then again...I guess this is true as well:

Anyway, that was just something I felt like sharing.  Nothing quite has the power that music holds for me.  One song brings on a thousand memories.  Or it can erase a foul mood.  It motivates.  It soothes.  Music is a drug that is so multi-dimensional. It's an upper and a downer, depending on your mood and playlist.  A live show gives me a high that I can ride for days.  I can put in that band's album and be right back at the show.

Bob Marley said it, and I believe he's right.  "The thing about music is, when it hits you, you feel no pain."

That's all....just an extra tidbit for you all.

Oh, but don't think I'm going to post something and not have a song attached.

Here you go:

January 12, 2015--Shinedown "Call Me"

Artist:  Shinedown
Song:  Call Me
Album:  The Sound of Madness

I have a question.  Did you actually watch that video or did you just scroll past?  If you answered the latter then I suggest you go back and watch the damn video.  It's worth it.  That guy singing, his name is Brent Smith and he has the voice of a god.  He and Barry Kerch are the only 2 remaining original members of the Shinedown that formed in 2001.  Now, even though some of the original guys have changed that doesn't mean that Zach Myers and Eric Bass aren't happy additions.

By the way, some people say that this is blasphemy, but I prefer Shinedown's version of "Simple Man" to Lynyrd Skynyrd's.  Don't judge me until you listen to it, because I guarantee you'll change your tune.  If you're into rock music then you probably already know these guys.  In which case you can agree with me. They. Are. Awesome.

My mom is probably one of their biggest fans I have ever met.

Mom With All the Guys except Brent

Oh, don't think she didn't meet Brent too. (pictured above)

VIP Pass and Autographed Shirt

Barry Kerch and Mom

Oh, there's more, too.  She's got 5 tattoos that were inspired by songs by the band.

Yeah, my momma is hardcore awesome.  And so is Shinedown.  So go look them up on iTunes or Amazon music or YouTube, even.  Go.  Now.  Jam on.

January 11, 2015--Cross Canadian Ragweed, "Soul Agent"

Artist:  Cross Canadian Ragweed
Song:  Soul Agent
Album:  Mission California

Oh, Cross, how I miss you.  These guys split up back in 2010 for multiple reasons.  Some say it's because Randy Ragsdale wanted to spend more time at home with his family.  He has a son with autism and wanted to be around more to help out.  There's also been speculation that one of the members wasn't "artistically pleased."  Either way, it's a loss to us all.  Cody Canada still performs with Jeremy Plato (bass) in their band Cody Canada and the Departed.

Cross Canadian Ragweed broke out onto the red dirt music scene back in 1998.

Look how young!  They graced us with six wonderful albums.  Ironically, I got to see them live on my 17th birthday since "17" was one of their biggest hits (from the Purple Album) and I even got a picture with Cody Canada!  Talk about a great birthday!

You can't go wrong when you listen to Cross Canadian Ragweed.  With songs like "Carry You Home", "Walls of Huntsville", "Dimebag", "Alabama", and "Fightin' For" everyone is bound to find something they love.  There's also a personal favorite:  "Wanna Rock & Roll" written by Ray Wylie Hubbard that the guys did a fantastic job on.

I hope you like them.  If you're just now hearing them for the first time or if you've been a long time fan, please leave a comment and tell me what you think.  It'd be much appreciated!

Thanks!

January 1-10, 2015: Josh Abbott Band, Wade Bowen, Whiskey Myers, Charlie Daniels, Matchbox Twenty, Casey Donahew Band, Prophets and Outlaws, Motion City Soundtrack, Pink

Alright, so here's the deal music fans:  I'm just posting lyrics and reviews to bands and artists that I admire and enjoy.  I hope that you come to enjoy them too.  I also hope that through this you will come to find new music, new artists, and new styles that you connect with.

I will happily take a request to any song, artist, or lyric that may be particularly special to you.  However, if I don't like it, which my opinion and right, I may not post that song or artist.  My request is that you don't get butt-hurt over it.

Okay!  On to the fun stuff!  I should have started this on the first of January, but I put the "pro" in procrastinate.  I'm going to throw a crap-ton of stuff at you today and then I'm going to make a valiant effort to keep up with this.

Bring on the music!

January 1, 2015

Artist:  Josh Abbot Band
Song:  She Won't Break
Album:  Tuesday Night EP

I can't say enough about the Josh Abbott Band.  They are Texas red dirt gold and this Oklahoma girl loves them.  I had the privilege of being front and center on their Friday night show at Billy Bob's Texas in Ft. Worth on the second of January 2015.  Wow.  I mean, they crushed it!  Great performers and all around good guys.  You can see the fun that they're having while they play their hearts out on that stage.  With a true appreciation of their fans and the poetic down-home country lyrics, I can guarantee that if you give these guys a shot you'll fall in love with their sound the same way I have.

They are a good time and they're also a band for the ladies.  With song's like "She Don't Break", "She Will Be Free" (another video you should definitely check out), and "She's Like Texas" your bound to feel special just for being a woman when you listen to these songs.  And guys, they can teach you all about how to treat a girl.  You want success?  Try listening to "Good Night For Dancing", "Touch", "Taste", or "Hot Water".  Those last three may make you feel the need to go take a shower.

January 2, 2015

Artist:  Wade Bowen
Song:  Patch of Bad Weather
Album:  The Given

Well, I have yet to have the honor to see Wade Bowen perform live, but you gotta love that voice, right?  I think my love for Red Dirt music stems from the meaningful lyrics and the unprocessed sound.  It's a little raw and a lot real.  Bonus points:  Wade Bowen is Cody Canada's brother in law.  Awesome.

Wade's got so many great songs that I couldn't possibly name them all.  AND....he's got another album coming out.  It's self-titled and available on iTunes or Amazon Music.  Check it out.  Seriously.  Some of my favorite songs of his include the above mentioned as well as "Ghost in This Town", "Trouble", "Saturday Night", "Before These Walls Were Blue" (which any parent can relate to), and "No Songs About Trucks".

January 3, 2015

Artist:  Whiskey Myers
Song:  Broken Window Serenade
Album:  Firewater

Whiskey Myers.  Damn.  These guys are raw and edgy and spot on.  You hear that voice?  You don't hear voices like that much anymore.  That man can serenade me anytime.  These guys I did get to see live.  Met Jeff, their drummer backstage after the show. Got a pic.  Bought their vinyl of "Early Morning Shakes".  Listen to it regularly.  Still completely in love with it.  They put on one hell of a show.

When you listen to these guys it takes you back to that classic rock stage.  I mean, they were obviously influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Then they come back at you with something different with soft country undertones.  If any band is a box of chocolates, it's this one.  You never know what you're going to get!  They've got a rebel sound with deep lyrics at one turn and then the next track they've got that fun sing-along good time feel.  Some of my favorites include:  "Gone Away", "Virginia", "Summer 2005", "Early Morning Shakes", "Reckoning", and "Headstone".

I hope you like these guys, because you'll be hearing them on your radio stations a lot pretty soon.  I'm betting that the country music world is craving a band like this.  Bringing back the real Outlaw Country that we used to know.  No more "pretty boy(s) in a cowboy hat that couldn't hit country with a baseball bat," as Shooter Jennings would say.

 January 4, 2015

Artist:  Charlie Daniels
Song:  Simple Man
Album:  16 Biggest Hits

Charlie Daniels.  Surely that's a name you've heard before.  I mean, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" was a major hit.  Now this man tells it like it is.  I love me some Charlie Daniels.  "Uneasy Rider" cracks me up every single time I hear it.  He started long before my time.  The fiddler/guitarist/vocalist/songwriter began doing his thing in the 50s!  He's one of those who just isn't afraid to say what he thinks or who he believes in.  With multiple gospel albums, I think that our Charlie may have been a fan of Mr. Johnny Cash.  If you're in the mood for that in your face good ole southern sound then you should listen to The Charlie Daniels Band.

January 5, 2015

Artist:  Matchbox Twenty
Song:  Hand Me Down
Album:  More Than You Think You Are

Well, it looks like I'm changing it up on you.  We're leaving the country scene to take a listen to Mr. Rob Thomas and his fellow band members.  Matchbox Twenty is forever destined to be one of my absolute favorite music groups to grace us with their songs.  I first heard these guys over 15 years ago when my family and I had moved to upstate New York for a short time.  What an experience, but that's a rabbit I'm not going to chase right now.

"Push" was playing on vh1 fairly often and my mom would stick a blank VHS tape in the VCR and record the songs and videos that she loved most.  This was one she literally waited on for hours to air.  We'd get so excited when it came on.  These guys have got some serious skill.  Their lyrics are deep and real and they cut to the quick.  With harsh metaphors and a sound that anyone call fall in love with, what's not to like?

I am stoked to say that in two short months I will get to see Rob Thomas perform live.  I'm sad to say that the rest of the band won't be there, but I'm happy that as the main songwriter and performer, Mr. Thomas holds the rights to the songs I most enjoy, so there's a chance he'll play them at the show.

If you like this one then you should check out others like:  "3 am", "Bent", "The Difference", and pretty much any other song they've ever released.  I have all their albums and can listen to them without skipping a single song.  How many artists can you say that about?

January 6, 2015

Artist:  Casey Donahew Band
Song:  Sorry
Album:  Standoff

Well, I guess I couldn't stay away from the country too long.  I'm back to it with the Casey Donahew Band.  This man is under appreciated and underrated. I love his sound, his style, and his lyrics.  "Sorry" has got to be one of the best break up songs ever.  Although, if you wanna think of your break up and laugh then I recommend that you listen to "Go To Hell".

This man has got love songs, fun songs, heart break and family.  He's down-home, laid-back, crack a cold one good. And he puts on a freakin' fantastic show.  I got to see him not too long ago and he's coming back around.  I got a picture and autograph.  Some of my favorites include:  "Put The Bottle Down", "Regrets", "Next Time", "Nowhere Fast", and "Runnin Through My Head".

January 7, 2015

Artist:  Casey Donahew Band
Song:  Regrets
Album:  Double Wide Dream

Yes, I know I used Casey Donahew for the 8th...but seriously..how can you not love him?  Surely we can all relate to his music.

January 8, 2015

Artist:  Prophets and Outlaws
Song:  Soul Shop
Album:  Prophets and Outlaws

Prophets and Outlaws.  Well, anyone who knows me knows that they are my absolute favorite.  I can listen to them on a loop and never get tired of their songs.  Listen to that!  Matt Boggs is the lead singer and he was on CMT's "Can You Duet".  While, I'm sad he didn't win, I'm even happier that it lead him to start up PAO with his college friends James (drums/vocals) and Steve Guckenheimer (guitar/vocals).

I met these guys back in October along with bassist CJ Thompson and keyboardist Jamie Ringholm.  I want so much for these guys to make it big.  They've got that southern soul sound and I just can't get enough.  I'm sure I'll post about them multiple times. "Soul Shop" made it to number one on the Texas Music Charts in 2014 as their first single. You just wait.  These guys are going to be HUGE one day.

I could listen to all of their songs, but I'm particularly fond of, "Shine on Me" (their new single), "Texas Home" (to be released), "My Song To You", "Sweet Soft Southern Smile", "Finally Alone", "Without You", "Chance of Rain", and "The Call".  My daughter's favorite is "Wolf Howl".

January 9, 2015

Artist:  Motion City Soundtrack
Song:  Attractive Today
Album: Commit This To Memory

Yep, tossing these guys into the mix of what I've already shared is sure to make your head spin.  These guys are a conundrum.  Their lyrics can, at times, be depressing or even emo, but the instruments and upbeat sound throw that out the window.  Sometimes they're damn near bubbly.  But I love them.  I got to see them at the Van's Warped tour in 2005 and my freakin' amazing brother bought me a backstage pass to meet them next month.  I'm stoked.  It's gonna be awesome.  I mean, if you've ever seen the Justin's (the lead singer) hair then you're probably as impressed as I am that he can bounce around on stage for 2 hours and it still looks the way it did when he went on--as though the stuck his finger in a light socket.

I love these guys and if you think you might want to give them a shot then here are a few songs that I recommend listening to:  "LGFUAD", "Everything Is Alright" (my daughter's fave), "The Future Freaks Me Out", "Capital H", "Together Let's Ring In The New Year", "This Is For Real", and "Feels Like Rain".

January 10, 2015

Artist:  P!nk
Song:  Try
Album: The Truth About Love

I have a tendency not to lean toward female artists.  Nothing personal.  I'm proud of any woman that can make it in the music world and still stay true to herself.  Hell, I'm proud of the guys that do that too.  But this woman?  Alicia Moore, otherwise known as Pink, is an incredible artist.

Surely I'm not the only one who thought, "Oh...another one..."when she came onto the music scene in the 90s.  All I could think was great...another one to group in with Britney Spears, Mandy Moore, and Christina Aguilera.  Nope.  Pink is incredibly her own.  I'm not downing the other ladies either...I mean, have you heard Christina's pipes?!  Mandy's more of the sweet girl-next-door voice, and Britney is Britney.  She's the only one of the four that I don't care for.  If you like her, great.  If not, join me.  But that's just the way it is, isn't it?  We all have our likes and dislikes.  Trust me, my music library definitely ranges from "Oh my goodness you HAVE to hear this!!"  to "Oh, God...please just don't judge me."

But I will gladly tell anyone that they need to listen to some Pink.  She's edgy.  She's tough as nails.  She's feminine.  She's a bad-ass combination of sexy, tough, in-your-face, and true.  I mean, did anyone see her perform on national television basically doing a circus trapeze act and still belting it like she wouldn't ever get winded?  It exhausted me just watching her!  The woman is a hard-working, multi-talented package of concentrated awesome.  I believe I'll go listen to her some more.

Okay, that's all ten days of this month. I got behind.  Hell, I'd never even started.  But I'm on it now.  I hope you like the blog and the music.  Feel free to leave thoughts, comments, and requests.  Don't feel free to leave hate.

Hope everyone has a great day and a music-filled 2015.
