February 1, 2015--Ryan Bingham, The Weary Kind

Artist:  Ryan Bingham
Song:  The Weary Kind
Album:  Junky Star

Ryan Bingham was born in 1981 in Hobbs, New Mexico.  He was raised all around Texas.  This young man has made the most of a rough start.  He lived on his own during most of his teenage years, house hopping between relatives and sleeping in an old pick up truck after his mother drank herself to death and his father committed suicide.

Bingham's uncle owned a roadhouse called the Halfway Bar where Ryan drew influence from the artists featured on the jukebox such as Marshall Tucker, Bob Wills, and Bob Dylan.  Before her death, his mother had bought him a guitar that he'd tucked away into a closet and didn't even begin playing until a year later.  His next door neighbor was a mariachi player and he taught Bingham how to play.

However, Bingham's lyrics and raw, raspy vocals come from a bone-deep yearning inside himself.  His song "Never Far Behind" is about the death of his parents.  I love just about every song from his album "Tomorrowland".  It's got attitude and it has heart.  Bingham's voice is a force unto itself.  Rolling Stones commented that it's like "the voice of Steve Earle's dad".  At 25 he sang like he'd been doing it for ages.  The now 33 year old hasn't lost his touch.

Ryan Bingham caught the eye, or ear, of former guitarist for the Black Crowes, Marc Ford.  They've worked together ever since.  Bingham has won Academy Awards for his music and has written songs for multiple movies and television shows.  Coming from a meager start in Stephenville, Texas he now lives in Los Angelas with his wife and music video producer, Anna Axter.

I love his song "Guess Who's Kncoking?", "Broken Heart Tattoos", and "The Poet".  There are many more, but you'll just have to listen to him to find out.

Enjoy!
